i got a female syrian, and i have fed her broccoli by holding the broccoli between my index finger and my thumb so my hand is not in front of the broccoli. she nibbled it peacefully. then i tried to feed her by putting the broccoli on my palm, but all she does is smell my hand and walk away, and twice she tried to gnaw my hand. she also wont let me pick her up, although i dont think she would because this was only the second day i got her. i am asking for tips on how to tame hamsters so the wont bite, will take food off your palm, and let you pet them and hold them. thx for answering~

1. Wash your hands after holding food; they can smell the food on you and will bite you if they think you smell like food.

2. DO NOT wear any body spray or colougne when you pick i up or touch her- she will not recognize the scent and it may confuse and scare her, causing her to bite you. If she does bite you, go get some Bitter Apple spray (Petco or Petsmart) and put it on the area she bites you in. If she is not biting you hard, she is just realizing that you are not edible and it will go away.

3. If you don't have the Bitter Apple spray, and she bites you, tell her "NO" in a deep voice with eye contact and put her back in the cage for a while.

4. Don't pick her up at first. Stick your hand in the cage and let her sniff and crawl in it, then try to scoop your hand under her belly and pick her up that way., or use two hands to scoop her up. If you grab her from above she may be startled. Also, when you go to pick her up talk to her in a calm voice.

5. If all else fails, pick her up with the scoop teqnique, lie down on the floor and let her crawl on you for 3 to 5 minutes twice a day for two days. It takes much patience and love to get them to trust you completely. Sometimes it is best to offer food and THEN while she's eating to pet her this shows her that you ill not hurt her and will train her to trust you.

I have a beatiful syrian hamster, her name is gizzmno and i have had her for almost four years. They are the worst type of hamster to get because they arent friendly and don't want to be messed with. Its also hard to handle them and stuff. But with a little bit of love and kindness you should be able to get the little guy to trust u enuf to let u handle him/her altho i wouldn't get ur hopes up about it ever being a lovey dovey guy. I got gizmno to finally let me touch her by feeding her popcorn, she absoultely loved it!!!! Everytime i open the cage now she thinks its for popcorn. But now she is in her old age and has cancer. When they get like that then they go back to not wanting to be touched at all. But its mostly up to the animal in question. Good luck and if u have more questions i would check out some sites on the net just gooogle syrian hamster it should give u some decent sites to look at.

I had several hamsters. The first couple days I wore gloves when I handled him. It is still fine to feed her like you are doing, but to get her used to you handling her, put on some gloves and hold her gently in one hand and pet her with your other hand. Hold her against you too. She will soon be tame enough for you to hold her without the gloves. You need to know that even after you have had her for a while, she may bite anyway occasionally.
Good Luck!!!!!

the golden syran hamsters were brought here into the United States back in the 1920's. If you've got a female they are more independant, but they do make fair pets once they've had a litter of kits.

Male hamsters make the best pets.

On the other hand, they only have a lifespan of 2 years.

Upgrade to a Guinnea Pig- Caries have a lifespan of roughly 8 years, they're smarter, cleaner, and more importantly you'll only have one heartbreak every 8 years instead of a heartbreak every 2 years.

Syrians are nastys pieces of work. You should have gotten a long hair. See if you can 'donate' her back to the pet store, we tried to tame my brother's for a few months. Never had a problem with the short hairs either but the long hair was the gentlest of the lot. Wear gloves when you handle her so you don't get bitten. Gardening gloves work well. It might take you a lot longer than 2 days.

Your hamster will eventually get used to you, but you will be bit from time to time. It's just their nature.

Umm...no clue, but if there if anything like treats for hamsters, try that. Reward desirable behavior and eventually she'll get it.

regular handling of the animal will get it used to you(usually).however, it will never actually be tame.they aren't like dogs, they don't care if your around or not.
