Actually Materazzi said "I hope you and your family die an ugly death. Go F#$% yourself". That's just as bad. But every team sport involves taunting by players who are trying to get you off your game. You have to be a professional and not let it affect your performance on the field. He let his team and his entire country down by his reaction. He didn't deserve the Golden Ball because he got suspended twice plus he only starting playing well after the first round. Cannavaro should have gotten it. He was a soldier for every single game. It's too bad Zizou had to end his great career on such a negative note.

Forza Italia. The Best team in the world!!!

of course not!!!! were these the words that has provoked Zidane?? Hmm..what a rude words...
well,,but we all know what Materazzi is like. he is such a psycho who often injures other players and does something not nice in the game..but afterall..i still don`t agree with what Zidane has done to him..he could have just pushed him or something. Zizou also did the same thing when Juve met Hamburg in 2001.
what make it worst is that Zizou did it in the final of World Cup and in his end of carier..it will be written permanently in history..that`s too bad...
if I were Zizou, i would slap Materazzi right on his cheek..but that would cost a red card too...^_^
but no matter what, Zizou is the best player ever...

If you want to win the game and contribute to your teams glory. You take it.There is so much trash talk in American football and NBA basketball. If everyone acted like Zidane there would be no-one left playing.
Shame on Zizou.
I don't think Pele ever headbutted anyone. And he was the greatest player of all time

I would in no way stand there and have someone insult me or my family and think that they are going to get away with it. As for what happened in the match with France and Italy. if the Italian player felt he had to sink to such a low level to get under Zidane's skin then he didn't think much of his teamates Obviously he felt that they couldn't win the game with Zidane in there. Maybe disciplinary action should be taken with that kind of behavoiur as well.

It was Zidane's last match and he had missed great chances to score, he was angry and the last thing he wanted was an insult about his family or anything like that, he didn't take the time to think and he reacted like any other human being.
It wasn't his fault, he was very unstable emotionally and he didn't mind head-butting the italian that had provoqued him. "I don't excuse him, but I understand him." As the french coach said.
Headbutt or not, he is and will always be a football legend and one of the greatest players of all time.

Tragically because of 9/11 there are many muslims in this world who are being treated unfairly including things being said to them or about them that should not be tolerated under any circumstances but if everyone that was called something they didn't deserve to be called started punching, where would we be. Viciously stupid people are what they are and its doubtful that anything is going to change that. Certainly not punching them out - there's just to darn many of them.

To answer this hypothetical question: if I were a star player in a football team that is playing in the world cup finals, and I have a million cameras aimed at me, I might yell something back, but I wouldn't do something stupid like head-butting my opponent.

i think what people dont understand is the fact that above being a soccer play he's a human being. sure he should have kept his cool, but sometimes people cant just stand there and allow people to say these things. if anyone called me that of course i would snap. just because you're a soccer player and thousands of people are watching you. doesn't mean that you're going to take the time to think about that. sometimes we just forget everything and lose control. zidane is amazing, regardless.

If a billion people were watching and the pride of my country was on the line, I might just walk away instead of acting like some miserable frog crybaby thug.

I believe it was something worth than "a dirty terrorist". Zizou acted like a man. If it was me I would've killed the damn spaghetti muncher. But - after the game.
