totally. It is amazing to see how detremental the rap/hiphop community actually hurts the african american society. Actually it negatively effects all of society. I think when rap first started it was really political and brought to light alot of the injustices brought upon the black communities. But today, it's all about t&a, drugs and violence. They promote violence and then turn around and sing about the deaths of their brothers. At any rate, the game has taken focus off of the real issues and made it into the whorish reality of today. There are movements, especially in black communities to really rally against hiphop and it's negative effect. That can only be a good thing, for us all. And use of the "N" word is unexceptable by anyone. Have some self respect. There is so much power to be had and it is wasted by ignorance.

I don't know if HipHop can give black people a bad rap unless they want to claim sole credit for it. There are enough white boys getting into it that it doesn't have to be just a black thing. But I do think that when it embraces such a negative vibe, that it will tend to have a negative effect on the communities that do identify with it too strongly. More groups need to take the style and use it to convey positive messages and respect for one another. I don't think a music style can be negative all by itself. If bluegrass or disco just talked about using drugs and disrespecting women and neighbors and such, it would be just as bad.

Hip-hop is one thing; gangsta rap is another. Gangsta rap, in my opinion, is the problem. It glorifes negative images of blacks and promotes a seedy lifestlye. It degrads woman. The use of the "n" word is deploriable. You are right: If the use of the "n" word was innocent, everyone should use it without consequences; that's not the case.

This is how some people see black people. This is not just entertainment. The success of gangsta rap is keeping many in the black communities down because it doesn't encourge the youth to become anything more than a common street thug. How sad.

Let's stop buying and endorsing this crap.

I agree about the usage of the "n" word (I don't say it on general principal). It's a double standard that blacks can say the word to convey friendship, but any way a white uses it is inappropriate.

However, I don't see hip hop as giving blacks a bad rep, because, though it is most popular among black people, not every rapper or hip hop artist is black. I think it gives individuals (the rappers) a bed rep. Individuals should be judged; races should not.

However, though I do dislike rap lyrics I feel that I should point out that I am a wholehearted proponent of free speech, and support their right to say whatever they want.

Definitely, the majority of the stuff we hear on mainstream radio depicts a narrow negative stereotype of what black people are like. However, I think it's important to not give all hip hop a bad reputation just because the mainstream stuff that gets the most play is derogatory.

There are a lot of talented and creative individuals out there with insightful and wise things to say, but unfortunately they don't get the same attention as people who want to rap about thugging, pimping, and blinging.

Yes, unfortunately for you, it gives blacks a bad reputation. Of course, they deserve it in other respects, as well and not only in being hypocrites as the most racist, misogynist and uneducated people in America. They also commit the highest percentage of crime, have the highest percentage of their people on the government dole, have by the far the highest drop-out rate, as well as the highest percentage of teen and single-mother pregnancies.
It is a shame and I am sick of hearing how the white man keeps them down. It is the black man that keeps the black man down. End of story.

However, there is something you can do about it. You can choose not to take it any more. You can choose to stop being called bitches and hoes; you can choose to educate yourself; you can choose to abstain from sex until you are married. All those things and many more.
It is up to the black woman to stand up and say enough is enough! Pull up your pants, take that rag off your head and go do your homework!
I am waiting, very patiently for that day and have been waiting for a long, long time. Unfortunately, I do not see it coming any time soon.
Best of luck to you!

I don't think it gives "colored people" a bad rep. If you take the time to look beyond the color of someones skin, you will find that we are all human, and I only listen to the songs for the music, not necessarily the words. Whatever the singer wants to do is up to them, but I don't use the "N" word I find it very offensive. And I am White!

is doesn't give them a bad rep but it influences all the young black people in stuff. so they think it's cool to have sex with alot of girls, be in gangs, and do drugs. personally the N word isn't in my vocabulary i just don't use it. i think that it's stupid when they get influeneced by it and feel that it's the right way to be. becuz it's not the right way to be. and black ppl get mad when white ppl say the N word becuz then they take it as disrespectin them. it gets on my nerves though becuz i live in a small town and it has four black gangs in it! i am so glad i live in the country part of my town, suburbs. and i agree with darthfangnuts

I think it's the actions of African-Americans that give African-Americans a bad rep. What other nationality uses a racial remark as their own greeting term? I have yet to hear a Chinese guy come up to me and go "hey Chinko, what's up bro?" or a Japanese guy go "hey Jap, where we hanging?" "Honky brother, we going driving tonight?"

You have to respect yourself, before you can look and expect respect from others.

Also, you know what, your grandmothers and grandfathers can use slavery as a crutch for the oppression of the white man, but an African-American in his 20's right now in America is about 40 years removed from the white oppressive white people.

The whole world is out there for everyone to live. How you decide to live it, is your character...and your future...

I think it teaches young people wrongly. Women are not hoes and should be respected, education and getting ahead in life should be glorified, and crime and drugs should be addressed for what they are- a dead end. No one should call anyone an N. I think the word should be stricken from the English language.
