Christians are considered the "salt of the earth." Christians are even stated to be "peculiar." We have special characteristics that make us God's chosen people. But if we don't do what we are suppose to do and act like Christians we lose our saltiness, and we are worthless, no more than the salt men trample on.

What language do you want this translated to? Do you perhaps mean "interpret"?
In the ancient world, salt was a valued commodity and was used to preserve food and add flavor (much as it is today). But salt can also destroy - another ancient practice was for victors to "salt the earth" so that those they defeated could no longer use it to cultivate crops. It can also cause pain, as in "rubbing salt in a wound."
So, I believe that in this metaphor Jesus is making us aware of the influence that we have in the world. Whether that influence is a positive one, as He hoped and taught - as in the case here, or a negative one is really up to us, since humans have been granted free will.

In earlier times especially, Salt was very prized and even fought over. It is still a spice that gives a certain flavor/reaction.
Also, for a long time it was used as a preservative.
So there you have: great value, needed by men, and used to preserve.

The commentary in my bible says, Pure salt maintains its flavor. In Israel, some salt was mixed with other ingredients. When it was exposed to the elements, the salt would be "leached out." Such leached-out salt was used for coating pathways. Help any. No...not really. I didn't think so. Sorry.

Everyone needs salt to live. Jesus said his followers had the relationship with Him that everyone else needs in order to obtain eternal life.

earth works hard and it sweats and in this sweat there is salt.
Or earth is sad and it cries and in its tears is salt?
The tears would make more sense.
