My son has two in his room and he had them for about a month now. I'm not sure what there call but I know you can't wipe out the population by keeping a few as pets. The birds in my yard eat them all the time.

You will not kill the population of your friends back yard as long as he still calls his yard home to one sexually mature male and female. They breed in the beginning of Spring, and you will know when it is time by the bright colors the male will take on. It is very hard to determine sex with lizards this small, before one year it is usually essential to have a blood test be the determiner of sex.
It is still not known how well all side-blotched lizards do in captivity, some breeders have had success enough to boast of 18 to 19 year life spans for captive lizards, while others have fairly little luck. So it is up to you, if you are devoted to these lizards they should live long and healthy lives, what is most essential is them having enough space to live out those lives, and a growing habitat as they grow.
That's about all I can tell ya hun, I'd need more specifics for any more info. Just one tip, although many articles say it is okay to give all lizards iceburg lettuce, it is not, it does not break down in their systems, (even though your lizard is a carnivore I felt it important to list this for all others who read).
Best of luck, let me know how they are doing.

if cared for properly, i'm sure they will live, but wipeing them out in his back yard seems a bit far fetched.if they're bountiful in his back yard;there is probably a good reason, like lots of food.if that is the case, i'm sure that other blotched lizards will move in to take the place of the ones now in captivity.

well, i never heard of this species but i also catch lizards, turtles, and salimanders in my yard. some should be fine but you should talk to an accociate at Petco. they'll probably get you to buy some crickets- the small ones don't chirp and are good for lizards- and a cricket cage and some mealworms- those need to be frigerated. good luck!

Well, if you say you have everything they will need, then they should be just fine if you keep them.
Just be sure to find a care sheet on the little guys if you don't already have one... you can never know too much about the reptiles you plan on raising!
And no, the population in his yard should be fine! =^-^=
Good luck!

they don't live as long as some lizards and they catch diseases relatively easy.
they're breeding machines so as long as you let the babies go you should do fine
they're very common if you notice the lizards disappearing layoff for a while
