A man of self-consciously stylish appearance or man who dresses flashily. It was an Insult in cowboy days to call a man a dude becuase it was calling him a city man that doesn't work. Know its used as friend, mate, comrade, or associate.

Originally, ranchers/cowboys out west would refer to city men as dudes. They were all slicked up like they were big sh**s, and so they were called "dudes." It was an insult.
