The brain. People relate the heart to love. But the fact is the heart's sole purpose is to pump blood (as far as we know). When people say things come from the heart, they are speaking metaphorically, meaning it comes from our love or good nature.

Love itself is almost impossible to define. It really is just a thought at some point. A thought is a chemical reaction within the brain, or causes a chemical reaction. When love is present it causes other chemical reactions in the brain and throughout the body, such as releasing endorphins that cause a euphoria feeling.

Love, I think, is caused by attraction, usually chemical or electrical. (My personal belief is it is electrical). By attraction, I mean just like magnets with opposite poles attract, certain chemical and/or electrical signals cause the same effect on a biological level. I also believe sharing love with another, not necessarily human, also creates more love to perpetuate itself.

I think the attraction portion is on a DNA level. I think that when we touch another human or animal, or any other living thing with DNA, we transfer DNA to each other. I think the foreign DNA can be read by our brain (at a subconcious level). I think that would also explain why psychics instantly get vivid visions when touching articles another person touched, they are just able to read the DNA at a concious level.

I think hatred is similar to love. The only thing I would say might be different with hatred, is that core beliefs reinforce hatred. For example, people that hate people based on race (prejudice), have that hate not only from genetics, but from learned behavior. (Teacher say, student do). I also think that learned behavior is taught through fear, perhaps from parental or peer action.

But I also think that we often hate people just because we pick up "negative vibes" through the DNA transfer.

You have to consider that with every breath we take, we breath in DNA from thousands of other living things, and we breath out our own DNA that thousands of other living things breath in. We may even breath in DNA millions of years old. I think the way our brain interprets the information stored in that DNA has effects on our thoughts, more than we would like to believe. It would be great if we could conciously sort the data and use it to our advantage. I'm sure some people can to some extent.

I think a problem we have today is that many people confuse love with lust and sex. People say, "let's make love". What they mean is "let's have sex". Of course it is helpful if you love the person you lust. You can also love people you don't lust after. And you can hate people you do lust after (like brutal rapists).

So I would say for sure that love and hate both come from our brain, assuming that is what controls all of our thoughts.

LOL, funniest question ever! The better question is, how does the brain generate the feeling of hatred and love through chemicals. Or even better than that, how the hell can we think based on a few molecules and currents running through a network. I'm still awed by it!

Our brains...the heart doesn't actually have emotions, the feelings in your brain make your heart beat faster or slower depending on your mood...the heart is used as a metaphor, but it's really just something that pumps blood.
