Well, I'm from Argentina and Caucasian (white).
Hispanics are white too.
The only ones that are not white are the hispanics that have been crossed with natives.
Hispanic people are actually the ones that came from Spain and their descendance.
For your information, many people from Spain are Celtics, and they have come to South America in the last centuries, so they are Hispanic, white and Caucasian.

Assuming by "South American" you are including Central America, It depends on whom you ask. My family always considered Latinos the same as white, but when I was a teenager, I heard a Latino friend say something about white people and I laughed and said, "But you're white!" and he got offended. He definitely did not consider himself to be white, but Latino, thank you! And that Hispanic thing... not if you mean European from Spain. In that sense, South American people are neither white nor Hispanic.

Latin Americans are called Hispanic because most are "mestizo", a mixture of native people and Spanish invaders. That changed the meaning of "Hispanic." While Hispanic means from a Spanish culture, Europeans from Spain are considered "white", while Hispanic people from central and south America are ... well, Hispanic. Latino. Now if you mean "Hispanic" in an academic sense, you mean from a Spanish source or beginning. If you mean "Hispanic" in a colloquial sense, you mean Latino.

Of course, asking if South American people are considered anything, is assuming they are homogeneous. They are not. People from Suriname are mostly descended from the Dutch, and people from Brazil are mostly descended from Portuguese and Germans. Not to mention all the Africans, East Indians, and others who came to work the fields. This is beside the native peoples.

In South America you can have people who are both white and hispanic. If you are mestizo you are half-white/half-Native American (South American that is) so that is the correct name. There are also black people in South America, and mulattos are half black/half white people. All are considered hispanic if they're from a Spanish speaking nation.

Probably Latino is the word used more often for the same thing.

well actually hispanics are like from spain or portugal. I'd say they're concidered Latin since they are from a latin country. But not at all white, they call everyone else who aren't from their "gringos" which means whites. lol, I think they usually refer to us americans. I was called a gringa, (I took it to no offense) just a name, and I'm not even really "white" ok I'll end this novel here. Hope your question is answered!

Hispanic I believe or Latino

Hispanic refers simply to people who speak Espanol.

White/Black are social constructs that are meant nearly to classify people. If you have blonde hair and blue eyes, yet speak espanol, then you are White according to the world's eyes. However, your own personal assertions can claim to be whatever color you wish to be. If you feel like a Black person, then you could answer BLACK on a census. If you choose White, then you're white.
