The French are claiming that Zidane was called a racial slur. Do you think this is true or just a ploy by the French team to get people to forgive them for their brutal player? Zidane looks pretty caucasian to me. Is he just trying to rally sympathy?

Zinedine Zidane is from Algeria and that would not classify him as a Caucasian to a lot of people's standards. Now, yes what he did was stupid and uncalled for, no matter what the Italian player might have said to him. Provocation is part of the game and you need to know how to take it. Besides, his action did not just affect him but the whole team him being the captain. Now, there is no excuse for what he did but I did feel very sorry for him, after having been very mad at him, when I saw him on the news today on the French international channel. He did feel very bad and he is not an actor. He is supposed to say in a few days what exactly happened.
Until then ...

Materazzi obviously said something, because we could see that they were exchanging words.
Whatever it was, it was not "Hello, Zidane, nice game we're having today."

The French are not looking for sympathy, they are just trying to understand how Zidane could have thrown away his one chance at international glory.

I was rooting for the French until this happened.
