It seems that the agitator isn't catching. It's also leaking water on the floor. I just got it used and don't know what to do.

Sorry to hear of your delima. A machine that isn't agitating and is leaking on the floor probably isn't worth the cost of repair. New ones can be bought for around $300. Did you buy it from a private sale or a used appliance place. If it was a store, you may may rights like a 30 day garnette to get your money back.

If this is a top load washer? It has something called "agitator dogs"...these non living things get worn out over time...the unit will not agitate. Depending on how old your unit it? And what the going rates are for repair? You may need to replace it. I live in the Pacific Northwest and our going rate where I work (am a customer relations manager) is 70 to diagnose it...the average cost to repair is 175-250 dollars. A new unit could cost you as little as 300. Keep in mind that with the energy efficient units on the market now you may be able to get large rebates from your utility company and state tax credits.
Good luck
