There has to be a better way than registering, going to a machine or paper ballot and casting a vote and then watch the chaos ensue on the nightly news and wondering who really won. Any ideas? Help

Nothing can guarantee the survival of our democratic republic. As Hitler once proved, a dictatorship may be only one election away, certainly less than a decade away--if the tyrant gains control of the media, the government, the military, and the youth!

So what can we do now to prevent this sort of tragedy.

(1) Begin openly demanding that our Congress and state legislatures guarantee a valid paper trail for all elections and provide time for the paper trail to be analyzed before results are declared in a close election.

(2) Encourage our friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances to do the same thing. Such a public campaign is much easier than one for a particular candidate and is attractive to most conservatives, moderates, and liberals, Democratic, Repulican or Independent. After all, one of these days the shoe could be on the other foot and fair-minded citizens know this.

(3) Likewise demand that election boards and state election supervision be bipartisan. In Florida in 2000 and in Ohio in 2004 (where the intent of the majority was almost certainly thwarted), the election supervisors were not only Republicans; in each case they were also the state managers for the Bush campaigns. That just can't be coincidental; and it certainly was not fair!

(4) Demand that our news media give adequate coverage to this problem, fair and open coverage. Write letters to the editor. Call their hot lines. Email their omsbudsman or managing editors. Threaten to drop our subscriptions and complain to advertisers if they don't provide fair, open coverage. And do it.

(5) Read blogs like RawStory and the Huffington Post to see the other side of the story. We don't have to accept what the blogs say--I don't always--but we can demand that the mainstream media devote attention to the issues they identify, just as they do with Fox News and Rush Limbaugh and Brit Hume. And we can publicly challenge candidates to answer questions about this issue no matter what office they are running for.

If we don't regain control of our free, fair election system in 2006, I too worry about the future of our democratic government. If we don't regain control by 2008, I have genuine fears for the welfare of my children and grandchildren.

It hasn't been a whole decade yet that we've lived with this debacle, but it's now six years and counting. If we lose control of our elections, we lose control of our government. And who knows what might happen next?

How has it survived the last 6 years really? It would be nice if every vote actually counted. It don't matter if you watch the news because they don't know who won either (example 2000 election).

Take your Thorazine, and catch your breath.Democracy is not perfect, but it is still the best system going.People should be involved and informed, meaning doing alot more than watching the news, and complaining.
