I was talking to my brother, a casual star trek nerd, about nerds, and he told me that people who know way too much about a sport are nerds too. I thought there was another word to describe them, like superfan, except with a negative connotation.
Or have we simply not placed a word for such people because we respect sports more than science fiction and Lord of the Rings rip-offs

A 'nerd' is any student. who studies excessively.
..So, if one has excessively studied the past history, events, and records, involved in a sport, he or she could be rated as one !

I dunno, maybe "idiot" would be more appropriate?

I think of "nerds" as people with a lot of techie or math type knowledge - you know, things that actually apply in this world. But guys who sit around and can tell you who got the most home runs in 1986? Yeah. No, they're not nerds. Nerds have useful information.

No, even better, they can now be referred to as the guy from Napoleon Dynamite - the uncle who sold Tupperware - can't remember his name..hang on...

That's it! We can call them "Uncle Rico"s!

Oh, please tell me I have a place in Net lexicon (or better yet, have coined a new word that will one day find it's way into a dictionary!)

OK, I'm a nerd..

PS - a jock is someone who PLAYS a sport, not someone who just knows about sports...

No. It's just something that a person is interested in.
