OK, here is the answer. The BBC got an Italian lip reader to check out what was said to Zidane.

M: Grabs Zidane's nipple.
Zidane says something.
M: No. Calm down, liar. I wish an ugly death to you and all your family. [Z's mother was seriously ill]
M: Go f u c k yourself.

Z turns round and knocks M to the ground. With his head.

According to a lip reader Materazzi called Zidane's sister a whore. But Zidane will give a press conference in a couple of days, I doubt whether he will go into details though. Whatever punishment he gets he will never play for France again as this was his last match. If the punishments includes a fine, he's gonna have to pay of course.

Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. and first told him: "Hold on, wait, that one's not for a ****** like you." As the players walked forward, Materazzi allegedly said: "We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore." Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying: "So just **** off." According to Brazilian TV Rede Globo, a lip-reader claimed that Materazzi twice called Zidane's sister a prostitute.

The replay was very telling. What would make a world class player who was running ahead of the Italian player turn around so abruptly to commit an act that would do critical harm to his status and the position of the team in a World Cup Final with all of France praying for a victory in a close gut-wrenching match? It must have been an ugly anti-Islamic slur calculated to set him off. What else could have possibly done it..the Italian definitely said something.

Hmm. Don't believe anything you hear about what Materazzi said to Zizou. Nothing is confirmed and you shouldn't spread it around because no one knows what happened.

Based on reviewing a clip of the situation, it seems like Materazzi did say something to Zidane because he (Zizou) was jogging away when he stopped and turned around.

Zizou usually only loses his cool if something happens to him before that (ex: being slide tackled from behind)

I really don't have a clue why zidane was so angry, but it's definitely because of something materazzi said. It was really wierd seeing him act out that way.. Normally he's a real cool headed player..

BRAZILIAN TELEVISION CHANNEL 'GLOBO' REPORTS THAT materrazzi provocked zizdane by saying that his sistor is a whore.Their specialist team who analysed the lip movements of materazzi points out that he said it twice.
Any way I feel sorry for zidane. This wasn't the way to end one of the most celebrated careers in football history. But whatever it is his legacy will stand forever.

According to the deaf lip-reading Brazilian experts, Materazzi insulted Zidane's (only) sister. He basically said that she is a whore.

That's been mulled around here through about a thousand questions but according to his agent he will most likely make an announcement in a day or two. The previous response pretty much says it all as to what was suspected to have happened. If someone knows of a press conference (time, date) let us all know.
