My brother in law's baby doesn't seem happy. My mother in law tells me that they don't talk to him or spend quality time playing with the baby. They think they're job is to feed him and put him to sleep. I feel bad for the baby!! What will his future be like if this continues?

Has this child been tested for Autism or down syndrome? These are questions that should be addressed now! If this is not the case, Perhaps the child is a Late developer. Emotions in babys really can not be translated at this young age. Also if you suspect a lack of appropriate parenting, now would be a great time to introduce them to an elementery parenting class. Best Wishes to you!

First, it doesn't really mean anything if the baby doesn't smile yet since that doesn't always happen before 3 months. Second, you are right that it is critical for a child's social and emotional developement that people talk to him and interact with him. He also needs time in various settings - on the floor for tummy time so he will learn to crawl and in people's arms for interpersonal skills. Not good to leave a kid in a car seat or high chair all day long. The good news is that once the kid becomes more interesting and interacts more on his own in about a month, the parents may take more interest in this new little person. Keep praying and interact with the baby when you get the chance.

I don't think smiling and frowning are behaviors of 2 month olds. That is to say, I doubt that the facial expressions are an indication of an emotional state. The WORST thing for a young family is an interfering and judgmental family, especially in-laws. If you want to be critical, look in the mirror and leave the baby alone!

The future is 'failure to thrive.' Children who are not held, loved and cuddled will get SEVERE emotional and physcial problems and can even die. Send your BIL some information on this symptom ASAP, or give a tip to the CPS. Hopefully that will wake them up to the damage they could be causing the baby.

He's only 2 months old. Give him some time. But just to play safe, why don't you babysit and play with the baby?

True, a baby needs more than food and a diaper change; but also don't underestimate the power a child has to change himself, and be happy despite his parents. Also don't be too harsh on the parents, none of us started this adventure knowing what we were doing.

Maybe he's just a more serious little human. All babies are different. Don't be too hard on the parents, the first few months are a serious adjustment, and maybe mother in law is just snippety.

Most babies aren't really smiling until they are about 3 months old, so there is really nothing to worry about.

he's still young give him some time and maybe you'll get to see that toothless smile.but i think whenever you are there take some time out to play with the baby, maybe if he sees more smiles he'll give more smiles.
