YES. I am no zoologist, but from what I remember, one of the main things that DEFINE a species is the ability to mate AND produce fertile offspring. However, some matings amongst different (albeit related) species can produce sterile offspring. Think of a mule born of a horse and a donkey.

Yes, but not always. A pig and a goat can't, but a horse and a donkey can. Although the offspring of most of these mixes are sterile. However this is not always true. Recently a hybrid cross of a Grizzly Bear and a Polar Bear was killed and the body given to science. It was determined to be able to breed when it was alive. So the answer is sometimes not obvious.

Of course. They're called hybrids. There's the mule for instance, a cross between a horse and a donkey. Then there's the liger, a cross between a lion and a tiger. As long as they're closely related and have the same number of chromosomes, they'll usually produce viable offspring. Often, the offspring themselves can't reproduce.

Sometimes they can if the two species are closely related (ex. tiger+lion=liger, donkey+horse=mule, I think zebras and something else can too) They're called hybrids. In several cases the hybrids are sterile and can't reproduce.
