I kept it.

I was given a $100. bill once for a $10. bill in change for a $20. bill in a store in NJ. I took it back and the girl at the service desk said it couldn't have happened because the cashiers don't keep $100. bills in there register. So I kept it with no guilt.

This happened 35 years ago in Vineland, NJ in a Two Guy's Store. All I had when I went in the store was the $20. bill and some lose coins in change. I found out later that when the register I went through was checked out, it only came up a few cents short. The only explanation was that someone shortly before me had given the girl a $100. for a $10. and without noticing she passed it on to me.

Okay...let's be honest...my answer is yes...but I hasten to add it depended on my circumstances at the time. If I think the mistake is going to come out of the clerk's pocket...I wouldn't dream of it! On the other hand, when I was in great need; it helped me to get gas to get a job, to support a child, etc., etc. Some part of me thinks the person would be happy with what I did with it...and I viewed it as a happy and unexpected blessing; when I needed it most. If I don't need it; I will give it back without even thinking about it. I suspect Life is full of "checks and balances" because it has happened to me in reverse.

There is a lesson in this for all of us...people often do things they normally wouldn't do; because their need is great. I have helped so many people over the years when I did have it; that I have a clear conscious. Thanks for asking; it was a great question.

I bought a hamburger chips and a coke and handed the guy a $20 he went to the till and took the change out and put it on top of the $20 and gave me the lot. I said thanks mate I didn't know you knew it was my birthday then showed what he had done. He thanked me for being honest. Now every time I go to that shop I get a discount and have easily made up for that money I could have gotten dishonestly

The answer is in your upbringing. Of course, I give it back. I didn't earn it so why should I keep it. I once found a bank bag stuck in the overnight depository for the mall merchants. It had about $10,000 in it. What do you think I did? Of course, I never got a thanks from the company but I didn't do it for the company to thank me. It is in your upbringing. I have been paid back 10 times over that amount in miracles that have happened in my life. I would not have it any other way.
