Because its seriousness is still debateable. Supposedly the earth has heated up a lot since 500 years ago. Well, weather prediction and monitoring was still so new in 1900, no one had mastered the concept of "tradewinds" yet. Isaac Kline, the famous weatherman of Galveston, declared that it would be impossible for a hurricane to ever hit Galveston....then came Sept.1, 1900...thousands died, because no one was prepared, no one expected a hurricane there....no one had built any barricades, nothing. The National Weather Service was young and incomplete.

How does anybody know, with any REAL accuracy, what the temp was 500 years ago?

There were plenty of inaccuracies just a little over 100 years ago.

As long as planes can land on the frozen Bering Sea each winter, I just don't buy the Global Warming package deal. Sounds a bit too much like Y2K.

Because the scientific evidence doesn't support the models that they are using. The models are lacking specific feedback mechanisms that exist in reality. So they come up with distorted results that have never been effective in a predictive sense.

For example, increased energy absorption from the Green house effect leads to more evaporation and more rain. This condensation absorbs the extra energy put into the atmosphere. The total change in temperature is then a wash.

Further, look at the sattelite data on temperature. You will find that over a 5 year average, there hasn't been any change. Year to year there are always fluctuations, but the average is what is really important in trying to trend the data.

It the same dilemma as ants. With all there social masterdom they cant affect the overall world due to their size. Most people don't understand the importance of global warming because they think they are to small in comparison. Plus the overall lifespan of the average human doesn't present a good understanding to the majority. Until the focus is not on greed and money, the preservation of life means nothing.

The 'care' level is directly related to two things: information and sacrifice related to how effective people think they can be. Since our world has been taken over by advertising and marketing (and the profits made therefrom), we have lost touch between generations of people and between classes of people (scientists, entertainers, white collar workers, blue collar workers, etc). The disconnection and isolation of modern life makes it difficult for individuals to put their actions into perspective. The individual person cannot get a solid grip on what sacrifices to make, how they affect the climate, and who they respect to tell them the things they can't find out on their own.
Marketers and advertisers thrive on our consumption. Our consumption is what has the most influence on CO2 and other greenhouse gases (methane from cows, unburned hydrocarbons, aircraft contrails (cooling)). The fact is, people buy more stuff when they are confused, so the advertising and marketing business thrives on individuals being told things to scare them, then being told there are 'conflicting' views, then being told that it is a "global" problem, which no individual can feel powerful enough to change.
The real solution is to buy less, buy local, work less, stay home, and get to know or build community networks so that people can get to know other people and then trust each other to find better ways to live.
The ironic part is that money basically represents CO2 being blown into the atmosphere under some part of the economy, and yet, there are all of these organizations saying that you should work extra hours to make extra money to give them (tax deductible, of course) to fight Global Warming.
