This is an old wives tale that is FALSE.
Babies do NOT need to cry.
If crying was good for babies lungs, then the same logic would say that bleeding is good for their arteries! Doesn't make sense, does it?
Crying is a sign that there is something wrong.
New babies, like your three week old, need to be held almost all the time.
They need to eat very frequently because their tummies are only the size of their little fists and they cannot take in much milk at a time. They are growing very fast and need the energy to build good brains as well as strong bodies.
There is an old joke about new parents who were awoken in the night by their baby crying.
They rushed into the nursery while busily looking up *crying* in their baby books.
The baby continued to cry...
Along came grandma.
Her advice?
*Put down the books and pick up the baby!*
Many mothers find that baby slings are worth their weight in gold because babies can be carried around comfortably while mama gets on with her day.
Enjoy your baby!

no. I don't believe there has been a study about crying being a contributor to healthy lung development. The " Babies need to cry to get strong" is an old wives' tale, going along with the completely credible theory that the lungs and the muscles therein need to be excersized like every other muscle, the same way baby learns to hold his head up, sit up, and walk. So, when a harried young mother can't get her child to calm down, the old wives console her with the idea that her child is getting some excersize for his lungs, and it is good for him, thus lessening her worry. Hope this helps!

"They" say a lot of things... "They" say that crying is good for baby's lungs because "they" want a good excuse to avoid having to answer a baby who is communicating her/his needs!
The myth may have started with doctors who are too lazy to check if a baby is breathing when born. It's easier to just neglect the baby a *little* bit, then hear a cry than to actually put your face near the baby and *listen* (or look) to see if she/he is breathing.
No, obviously, there are no babies who have lung problems because they weren't neglected and left to scream. Crying is good for a baby's lungs the same way that bleeding is good for their blood vessels!

Babies cry. A lot. It helps if we can feel that there is something good about it, because otherwise our nerves just get frayed. Sometimes, this expression is used to encourage us to let the baby cry itself to sleep, rather than being dependent on us. I'm not sure this really works. A little whimpering is okay as the baby settles down, but purple-faced screaming isn't. You have to learn to interpret your baby's cries. So take this expression with a grain of salt. You don't have to jump every time your baby cries, but you need to pay attention to see if there is something you need to do.

I dont think they're would be problems for not crying enough because I know from stories that I was not a crying baby. And I'm perfectly healthy. But crying when they are first born lets you know they can breath so I would guess he/she is just trying to let you know that she can still breath or he/she is just being a brat. ;-P

It cleans the fluids out and can help the lungs develop because they expand/contract more.

it clears the airway and increase oxygen which then increases the oxygen in the blood that is delivered to their body
your second question.... if a baby was just born or had surgery you want them to cry because if they do not their airway can become blocked by their tongue or Mucous membranes in the back of their throat and this could interfere with their breathing.... that is why crying is good.

If they don't cry when they are born it is usually because they are not alert and something is wrong. Then the airway passages have to be suctioned out which is less effective. So yes, it is healthy.
