The Simpsons is set in a fictional American city of Springfield. The state in which it is located has never been made clear, and it is not actually intended to exist in any specific state. Nevertheless, throughout the show's history, fans have tried to determine where Springfield is by taking the town's characteristics, surrounding geography and nearby landmarks as clues. As a response, in more recent episodes, the show has been intentionally deceptive about the state, and nearly every state and region in the U.S. has been both suggested and ruled out by conflicting "evidence." Groening has stated that Springfield has much in common with Portland, Oregon, the city he grew up in,[19] and the name "Springfield" was chosen because it is a common city name, appearing in more than thirty states. The geography of Springfield and its surrounding areas are seen to be "flexible" and have been shown to contain coastlines, deserts, vast farmland, and tall mountains, or whatever a story or joke requires.

They live in a ficticious Springfield, the state is unkown due to the fact that the city where the Simpsons live have ocean coast, rivers, mountains, gorges, forest and deserts. The state is suppose to be ambiguous.

I don't think there is actually a state.... Springfield has a desert, a badlands, they are near the ocean, they struck oil... the list goes on. There is no one state in US that has all those things.....

I'm inclined to say Illinois, but theres times in the show where you see them driving through the desert, and i don't think the Midwest is prone to desert like conditions

It tell you on that "Behind the Music" spoof episode of The Simpsons. At the very end it says "This northern Kentucky family...". Therefore they live in Kentucky.
