Amway makes a product called L.O.C. that is so safe-you can drink it without worrying about side effects.
Years ago, when I lived in the mountains, and was totally into organics, I used this stuff to clean everything, as well as in the laundry.
We hooked a hose to the drain in the washing machine, and fed it out through the vegetable garden to be used for watering. It was great, and we had a huge garden. People used to stop by just to check it out, and were amazed that we used recycled laundry water.
I highly reccomend this product.

My mother grew up in a rural area and she used to talk about her mother doing the laundry using lye soap. They made it out back with pig fat or something like that. If she was still alive I could ask her. Some of the old timers probably know how to make it and what it consist of. I know it was strong stuff.

You can use lye soap, and the instructions are on the can of lye. All you have to do is melt the tallow (fat) and lye to about 100 degrees and mix up. You can pour the stuff into an old cake pan and cut it inot bars when is cools. Hope this helps, This is one of the oldest ways to mkae soap.

A little vinegar added to your rinse water will get your whites whiter and your brights brighter. But be careful not to use too much--unless you want to go around smelling like a tossed salad!

My Grandmother used to use a regular bar of soap. She would grate it and use it in the washer. She said that it worked real well for her. I tried it on the dishes one time when I ran out of dish soap. Worked good enough for me. Good Luck.
