I'm sure many of us remember all the great variety shows of days gone by -- Ed Sullivan, Carol Burnett, Sony & Cher, Tom Jones, Laugh-In...any ideas as to why they don't exist any more? Do we live in the video age...are the shows to expensive to produce...no one can be bothered to take the time and effort?? What do you think. Also, name others you enjoyed/recall...who would you like to see put on this type of show...fave artist of today? Thanks for your input.

Yup, variety shows were big back then, when the outlook of life was much more simple. It seems that each generation is not interested in the entertainment of the previous generation (e.g., Lawrence Welk anyone?) and they want something more "exciting." Seeing people do silly skits that were mostly fun and not political just isn't interesting. Everything has to be "EXTREME" or... um... "X-TREME", is it? Ugh.

So yes, the MTV Generation has given us quick-clip entertainment... everything you need to see in 10 second flashes. No one has time to just sit and enjoy a show that's just plain funny unless it has something important to say.

Yes! I wish there were new shows like they use to entertain us with! Seems like they don't know how to produce anything but reality shows. I really miss the ones you have mentioned and also all those great Christmas Shows they used to have around the holidays they really made the holidays special! I've seen one a couple of years back but it was NOT like the originals. Lately every time I rent a movie to watch that seems promising it is like almost porn...how disappointing. I think no one is taking the time to create a very good show or movie these days. There are plenty of talented people out there and plenty of money going in to the wrong things so I think its "Time" people want it quick.
