Mine has an extremely uncanny resemblance. I like my look though, which is why I did a self portrait instead of making someone different. Avatars are fun though they're like virtual Barbies, so I make a lot of them but the one I use is my self-portrait:-)

My face and hair looks the same(except I have bigger eyes and I curl my bangs so they look like Bettie Page), but they don't give the option of different body types-they all have boring little girl bodies, I wanna see some curves;-) I also wear red lipstick a lot, and they don't give a lipstick option either.

;) My avatar is a fairly-good in-depth self-portrait!
[I am honestly even MORE blue in my DL pic.]
Mine turned out to be an internal self-portrait combined with an external one--it looks like the sum of my self: philosophical, medical, all components considered, an image of the inadequately-breathing dead, a way of being honest with myself in regard to my overall health picture, a coping mechanism in its way.
I think overall the avatar system is fun, light-hearted, and I actually appreciate the somewhat entertaining way to express my more macabre reality. ;)
I mean, where else can you find such a *cute* way to visually express that I have lost my ever-lovin' mind than that pic showing me there holding my head after it's gone and rolled off? ;)
I also appreciate that it gives ALL users the chance to sort through what they value, how they perceive themselves, how they wish to appear vs how they DO actually appear...what they hope to see in the mirror vs reality...key factors brought to light by your excellent question--THANKS! :D

well..
i think if I did have an avatar-- I would try to do a self portrait-- because it is cool seeing urself as an avatar. But I would also switch and be a little different-- because u can choose anything-- so i'd use two options..
i should make an avatar soon..

I tried, as closely as possible, right down to the shaggy hair & red earrings, but when it comes to the face, I think they should have come up with more options... But the clothes were a little better, I found a "World AIDS Day" T-shirt like mine & some ripped Jeans as well, but the as for the shoes, I would never wear flip-flops! I cant stand that thing between my toes!

I tried to make mine as close as possible, but it actually resembles another girl I know more than it does me.
Too bad you can't tweak the faces, like on the Sims games.
