one megabyte = 1,048,576 bytes

Simple answer to a simple question.

Yes mega mean 1 million in SI terms, but this is computer terms and it is based on the binary system which is in powers of 2.

ISP's trick you by stating their connection speed in Kbps (note the small b in Kbps) which is kilobits per second. Kilobytes per second is noted by KBps (capital B). There are 8 bits in a byte so your actual download speed is a lot lower than you'd expect. Say you have a 512 Kbps DSL connection. That is 512 kilobits which is really only 64 kilobytes per second. You may have noticed that when you are downloading something off the net. Same goes for cable connection at 3 Mbps which is 3 megabits per second or 384 kilobytes per second.

Prefix Name SI Meaning Binary meaning Size difference
m milli 10^-3 = 0.001 n/a n/a
k kilo 10^3 = 1000 2^10 = 1024 2.40%
M mega 10^6 = 1000^2 2^20 = 1024^2 4.86%
G giga 10^9 = 1000^3 2^30 = 1024^3 7.37%
T tera 10^12 = 1000^4 2^40 = 1024^4 9.95%
P peta 10^15 = 1000^5 2^50 = 1024^5 12.59%

In the SI meaning it would be 1,000,000 bytes
In binary it would be 1048576

So take youre pick!!!

There are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte and 1024 kilobytes in a megabyte. so which you're able to desire to divide via 1024 to get the form of kilobytes. Then divide that extensive form via 1024 to get the form of megabytes.
