In my opinion having a baby without an epidural is like having a root canal without Novacaine! There's just no point! I know people will tell you that they will medicate you and you won't remember anything and the drugs are bad for the baby bla bla bla, but in general, in normal births with an epi you are pain free and able to enjoy the birth of your child without worrying about pain and discomfort. You can also get a walking epi that stops the pain but allows you to move freely. Yes there are risks, but you risk getting in your car and driving to the store. You have to weigh the risks with the rewards. With my first child I went as long as I could naturally and because my doctor thought my labor wasn't progressing fast enough he strongly suggested it so I did and in talking with the nurse, I dont know why I waited so long!! My second child, I told them to call anesthesia up as soon as I was progressed far enough to get it! Both kids delivered within half an hour of the epidural start.
If you go naturally the pain is temporary and will be gone as soon as you set eyes on your babe, but I see no reason to suffer for hours and hours waiting for the big event when you can be happy and social with anyone you let come be with you during your birth.

I did not have an epidural or any drugs with either of my births. The second hurt more than the first, and at one point I asked the midwife about painkillers--and she said "we passed that point about 45 minutes ago," so I suppose I'd gotten through the worst of it.
But both were "easy" births, less than 4 hours from hospital check-in to delivery, no complications.
With preparation, breathing exercises, stretching practice, and so on, a lot of the pain can be minimal, and it's safer for mom & baby not to use drugs or surgery to interfere. However, it's also safer if the mom isn't trying to crawl out of her skin to get away from the pain, so those who need epidurals or painkillers should use them.
It's up to each woman to decide for herself what her tolerance levels are--and she can't even decide ahead of time; each birth is different.

I have four kids and had an epidural EVERY time. I have a very low tolerance for pain, and labor is pretty darn painful. I tried do do it natural the first time and ended up having back labor and some other issues, I finally decided to have it and I wished I had done it sooner. You are so much more relaxed and able to concentrate. I really feel like there is no reason to go through that much pain if you don't have to.

Make sure you go to a hospital that will have an anesthesiologist available 24/7 and go for the epidural. I have had 2 c-sections and epidural with both.

I had that and a spinal. 2 kids. Yes I think everybody should have something. Why be in pain if you don't have to. Both of mine were c-sections, and the epidural didn't take with the first. I got put to sleep. Still better than being in pain!

ABSOLUTELY!!! I had an epidural with my first, I had to wait too long with my second child before I got one (what a nightmare) and I was induced AND had an epidural with the third. It's a wonderful thing.

by the time i asked for an epidural with my first baby it was too late and i wish i had asked earlier. they gave me something to knock me out in my IV but it made it worse because id feel every contraction (hurt like hell) then pass out between them making it seam like the contractions were one long one. with my second baby i made sure i had an epidural as soon as i started to feel the pain.
