I heard ameren on the radio the other day say that if you have ceiling fans or box fans to turn them off while you are away from the house, each one can save you 7 bucks a month on utilities. May not be helpful if you don't use fans, but that I would contribute.

We do a number of things in our house. Among them are: turning off lights, tv's, radios, etc., when not using them; do a FULL load of laundry (doing many smaller loads uses more energy); taking shorter showers; turn the thermostat down by 2 degrees in the nighttime and when away from home (in the winter, of course); turned our hot water heater down to 140 farhenheit; keeping curtains closed in the summer to help keep rooms cooler; saving dishwater to water garden when it doesn't rain enough (don't have to worry about it this year so far).

only use the air con when you have to. hang laundry outside to dry. turn off appliances that are on standby. turn out lights when you leave the room. use those funny looking light bulbs that reduce your power bill. a little plastic grommet in your taps and shower head will save you gallons of water (not to mention power to heat it as you're using less of it). use the microwave instead of the electric stove. do laundry when you have a full load. don't use a dishwasher. keep your fridge full and turn down the thermostat in the fridge and freezer during winter.

Only have your ac on during the time you are home i.e. turn it off when you leave for work and turn it on when you get home.
Use fans at night instead of the ac, try to reduce your shower time (hot water is a big energy user).

Keep your thermostat set at one temperature (between 68 - 70), turn off lights when not using them, limit times in the shower, get an attic fan, tint on windows, switch to fluorescent light bulbs....the list goes on and on..
