it matter what you are trying to do, if you want up to date duo-core tech . then look at intel. If you looking for an all-around 64-bit system look at an low-end amd 754 or 939. Want a 32-bit system them get you a sempron or celeron cpu. Last but not least what a cool linux box, google up some socket 7 chips (i know p1 tech. but you can find a motherboard on the low and set-up ubuntu nice with a max 768mb of ram).

Best value CPU ? I would imagine the Intel Pentium D-805, dual core for around $125.

sempron 3400+. runs at 2.0 ghz. like 150 bucks.. if not amd board ... go to your library.. theyve surely got some pentiums in their boxes.. open one carefully... make sure no one is looking and take the chip out. hehe

amd a64 are cheap now...
