Wal-Mart is evil. They promise to bring jobs to areas but what they are really doing is causing smaller businesses to close, putting people out of work. The jobs they do create are part-time, where generally, the businesses they put out are full-time positions. Even with recent court rulings, they manage to sneak under the rules by making the part time hours under the amount that would require some sort of insurance.
They make threats to local governments to get their way. If they want to build in an area that is not suitable, they will threaten to pull out of the area completely or move into a neighboring area taking the tax dollars away.
I have not shopped in a wal-mart in many years and I have no plans to ever set foot in one again. Sure they have low prices, but you get what you pay for. Cheap clothes that wear out after a month or two. You could go to Target, spend a little bit more money and have much better quality of merchandise.

Of course they are a great business....aren't they the #1 retailer in the World? How many times at the top of Fortune's 500? They must be doing something right!
Highly effective Low Cost Strategy
Employee Retention
Efficient Supply Chain through EDI...perfect model for business schools.
Know their target market inside and out, and consistently deliver value to that target market.
Cons.....
Bad Reputation with the Media...they could have taken greater measures to prevent this, but they can't be perfect with everything...
Do I shop there? Very Rarely....It's probably been 5 years or more since I set foot in a Walmart. I prefer Target....simply because I adore their Marketing and Advertising....I'm a dork!

The question of Walmart is more a moral one than anything else. They obviously have a business model that works, but the question is "Are they doing the right thing?" I guess I'm a bit of a hypocrite because while I do some of my shopping at Walmart, I do not wholly support their business model. They squeak a lot of the right squeaks, but I smell a rat somewhere.

walmart is good because they have cheap stuff, which means my dollar can buy more cheap stuff...sure they employ people at low wages, but they probably dont have the skill sets necessary to get better paying jobs anyway, they also have a wide variety of things under one roof, like the super walmarts where you can even buy groceries.
As far as killing the mom and pop stores, well those were only in smallish sized towns, which were dying before walmart came along.

I love Walmart. The only cons are that there's never enough parking because its always full whether you go at 7 AM or 10PM. And the lines are too long sometimes. But they have everything I need and at a great price.

It's bad because:
1) Their products are low in quality
2) Stores are not kept up well
3) Far too many staff are awfully untrained, unpleasant, and unwilling to render assistance
It's good because:
1) Provide employement for people with limited skills
2) Sells affordable products for many
3) Not a bad place to get quick-something for short term use
All I can say is, I personally do not shop there.

I like Wal Mart cause Wal Mart has everything I need and they have good prices on stuff. I don't really give a damn how they treat their employees because as we live in America we have the choice to work where we want and vice versa.
