Mix live active yeast with corn syrup and put it on little cards of heavy paper near where you see their trails. The ants take it back to the nest. Everyone eats it... Then their stomachs explode.

It won't KILL ants but it will keep them away...
try sprinkling cinnamon around!

They absolutely hate lemon juice, they stay away from borders marked with it. But if you want to finish them, I'd say burn the nest's entrance with alcohol on fire, until most of the nest dies.
Chemicals are not safe specially with toddlers around.

what did the ants do to you? if they are outside leave them alone, without the smaller insects we could not survive on this planet.

Windex. It is topical but not harmful lethal to humans or animals or even birds.
