I've never heard of such a thing, and have used computers for many years. That's not to say it doesn't exist. But it sounds like someone pulling someone's leg, to me... if for no other reason than it would be mighty hard to press 12 keys simultaneously with 10 fingers (or digits, if you prefer).

Or maybe it's like the guys in the missile silos; it takes two computer users simultaneously pressing keys to launch the doomsday "delete" process. :-)

I also just spent about ten minutes searching online, including a favorite site about web hoaxes (since this sounds like the kind of blather one gets via chain e-mail). I found nothing.

It might help if you posted where you heard or read this. It sounds to me like a case of "consider the source."

(Since you added details):

OK... no offense to your friend, and I'm glad it wasn't one of those mass e-mail warnings.

It's funny that the toddler situation you mentioned is the one situation I could envision that happening in. In fact I had considered offering that very thing as *evidence* that nobody would invent such a key combination, knowing kids with their little fingers *and palms* could hit it randomly... but I decided not to mention it because hitting that exact combo (and no *extra* keys) seemed unlikely, still.

I still doubt the whole idea of 12 purge keys for the ten-fingers reason I already gave, and because I just don't envision much use for it. It is possible, however, that the child ruined the keyboard and/or locked up the computer (at least one of which also happened to me in that very scenario). My guess is that the hard drive was not wiped clean, and any data could be retrieved by moving it to another computer, or other methods.
