Plug in the ethernet cable into the laptop. Wait for it to say "Limited or no connectivity" and then restart it with the ethernet cable still in it.

That almost always works.

Okay, first let me say that if she had DSL she probably used their disk to set it up. To go to a cable modem you don't want the settings that DSL created. If you are running WinXP go to create a network connection and follow the instructions. You do not need to set anything up, just let the settings take place as the program asks. Leave everything set as default. Once you have created a new network connection it should work fine.

usually, with everything connected, and turned on, restart the cable modem. On most networks this will establish a connection.
If not you will have to call customer service for your cable company, they may need to have the modem recognize the MAC address of your computer.
If you are using a wireless router, this is a different issue and could have many solutions. Again though try restarting first the cable modem and then the router. usually this fixes the problem.

I suggest calling your ISP tech support they should walk you through if. My brotherinlaw hooked up a cable modem I called his ISP and they walk me through the step in about 10 minutes
