Usually, but not always, a question is a request (note the similarity of words) for something. The something might be a physical thing ("Can I please have the salt?"), but usually it is information. The information might be a description ("What does a gladiolus look like?"), or an intention ("Where are you going?"), or an explanation ("What is the meaning of life?"), or a prediction ("What'll happen if I push this button?").

There are also 'hypothetical' questions ("If you knew the world was going to end tomorrow, what would you do tonight?").

There are also questions that are phrased so as to suggest what answer is required ("Would you say Mr Jones's driving was an accident looking for a place to happen?") - in a courtroom called 'a leading question'; outside a courtroom called 'journalism'.

There are also questions that are statements in disguise ("Do you really think we're going to keep taking your s**t?") - called a rhetorical question.

There are also questions that are orders in disguise ("Are you going to take the trash out?") - called nagging.
