A few reasons.
1) Strategic Oil Reserves...
Neo Conservatives, many now in the current administration formed a doctrine of invading the middle east to secure oil. This group was the called the Project for the American Century. They stated it would take a new pearl habor to be able to act.
2) Stategic Military Bases
Osama Bin Laden turned from CIA asset, to terrorist. One of his issues was the building of an American Military Base, the BIn Sultan Airbase. We closed that base after 9/11. So what do we do now, we want a foot hold in the region......Iraq was perfect 13 permanent bases are being built. We don't talk about leaving because we might not.
3)Machismo
Neo Conservatives such as Cheney and Rumsfled Pearl and other Nixon left overs, always saw the Military as being under used. Cheney wanted intellegence controlled by loyalist Rumsfeld in teh Dept. of Defence, instead of the CIA. They wanted to prove to region that they could strike and take out a country cheaply and with few troops.....this of course is not the case. Bush also wanted to avenge for the attemtps on his father.
4) Sanctions lifted.
Regardless of the violations the sanctions were going to be lifted. And Iraq was going to begin trading in Euros, not dollars, cant have that.
Hypocracy.
1) Sadam gassed his people during the Regan Administration. and remained our ally. We didn't care then. Just now.
2) Sadam is on trial, guess what he is not on trial for gassing his people, hes on trial for shooting people he claimed tried to assinate him.
3) Not only did we give him all those weapons.....but we also armed Iran as well.......both sides.
4) Sadam was our ally before the invasion of Iraq.....he asked the US permission to invade Kwuait. We let him...then we turned on him.
5) What did we win in gulf war 1? we won a military base in Sudia Aribia...
6) WMD's... you can call a horse a mule all you want it doesnt' make it so.
There are those who want to claim we invaded a country for mustard gas that was unusable....sad.

7) Iraq and Al Queda connections....this is the saddest.
There is an echo chamber of repeating things until it becomes true.....this is one of these.
The truth is here.....watch it, it has interviews with the princple CIA anyalst who looked at the info who were there.......
http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/darkside/view/
Simply Cheney created a intellegence branch in the Dept of Defence to find intellegecne.........the CIA disputed and objected to its ligitmacy....the president and Vice president went on tv saying it....regardless....it all in the documentary....

one of the most important things youll see.

1. Violation of the Cease Fire
2. Iraqi support for Al Queda. Diplomatic relations were established between Saddam and Mullah Omar in 1999. Salman Pak military base was used to train Al Queda Militants who operated against the Kurds.
3. Zarqarwi went to Iraq after the collapse of the Taliban in 2002
4. Sanctions were not being enforced because the Bribery by Saddam to UN Functionaries enabled Saddam to rearm. That is what The Oil For Food program was used for.
5. 500 WMD Shells have been found.
