We went to Providence (Hancock Park area) last Saturday night and had the 9-course tasting menu with wine pairing. It was good but expensive ($359.10 including tax and tip for 2).
The Water Grill is an excellent place for seafood as well, although I hear the new chef isn't quite up to the level of the previous one (who is now at Providence). It's located downtown.
Patina (at the Walt Disney Concert Hall) and Campanile (on LaBrea) are considered top-notch as well. And Spago (Beverly Hills) is still considered one of the best, even after all these years.

Hey Caleb P.,
Could you be more specific about what kind of food and what your price range is. It also would be helpful if you gave us an area of Southern California that you would like to eat at.
Thanks,
James
p.s. I'm kinda confused regarding the previous person's answers. Some great places are listed and then for some reason: Cheesecake Factory! Olive Garden does a better job then the Cheesecake Factory (And that is not saying much... :-( )
