Back in ancient times, sometime in November, European peasantry drew lots for this title. Wearing a paper crown and motley garments, he was allowed to do whatever he wanted for an appointed time. A crowd favorite was having the masters serve the servants. However, early on it is suggested the merry one's reign came to an unceremonious end as he was sacrificed on the altar of Saturn. Later the practice was substituted for the burning of the god in effigy.
Were they out of their minds back then? Are we any different today? Though their lives were constrained by certain religious and superstitious beliefs, they obviously had freedom to pursue other base instincts like lust, violence and revenge. Today we are just as human but are under a totally different set of restraints. Certain deviants still go beyond the law and pursue their base instincts while the majority simple indulge themselves via movies or substitute celebrations like New Years and bachelor parties. I guess you can dress a man in fine clothes and teach him manners, but it still doesn't change who he really is at heart. (See Red Yeti's picture)
