I give my students homework packets due on Friday. Usually, if a student was absent, they get the same number of days they were out to turn in their homework. It's starting to get hard to keep track of who owes what - when. So now I'm thinking of just having absent students turn in their homework by the first Friday they are back. I'm curious about what other teachers do. Thanks in advance! =)

our school wide policy (actually it's county wide) is one day absence equals three days to make up. If the student is absent on Monday they have until Thursday to make it up. Multiple days are add on i.e. Monday is due Thursday, Tuesday is due Friday, etc.

I think it depends on the grade - my Kindergartners have homework, but it's fun things, and I mainly use it to promote parental involvement (I teach in a fairly low SES district). Also, I have kids coming and going a lot so I don't really sweat it - I tend to cover what they need in class and use the homework as simple reinforcement. Now, if i was teaching 3-6th grade I would definately have a policy - I liked the answer of the first girl - 3 days to turn it in. That seems fair and is certainly do-able and if you establish that rule in the beginning of the year they cannot complain (yeah right :)

when i was i teacher i did not give out homework as to me it is a statement that we cannot achieve the necessary objectives in class - it always seemed pointless to me to fill the class time with unnecessay activities in order to leave important work to be carried out at home - at least in the class students got the work done and were able to get assistance from me

after all, how many employees (other than teachers) continue to work at home outside working hours ?
