And that is why you are supposed to have him in a covered tank. Bettas are known jumpers.
He's probably just stressed. By tomorrow he'll be back to normal.
You wet your hands before you picked him up, right? Otherwise, you may have damaged his slime coating. Put some StressCoat in the water with him - it'll replace any electrolytes he lost, add aloe to the water to promote any needed healing, and calm him down a bit.
He's probably going to be afraid of you forever, mostly because you're human and he's not, and you're a heck of a lot bigger than him. That, and judging by the questions you ask on here, you have no clue what you're doing with that poor fish.
Good luck!

Fish don't get scared, although I am sure that not breathing for awhile didn't feel very good. Just put something on the top of the bowl so that it doesn't happen again. Also, are you changing the water enough and keeping it clean? Fish will sometimes do that in unclean water.
Don't worry about it hating you. It's a just a fish.

I had one that jumped out of a glass and flopped down the garbage disposal. (Was changing his water.) I fished him out, and put him back in his bowl. He went and hid for a while.
Your betta isn't scared, and hating you. He's just feeling poorly so he instinctively is going to hide some where until he's feeling better.
Just be sure get a cover for his bowl. He'll never learn his lesson. Also note that bettas are more likely to jump in poor water conditions, and small containers. (They are hoping to flop to a large body of water.)

Ignore the ignorant people who are not in touch with animals. I’m sure you are right when you say your fish is scared. Many small animals have more complex feelings then people give them credit for. I don’t think he/she is afraid of you per say. Probably just the whole experience in general. Just give it time. Most importantly you should know that Betas DO jump and may do it again. He/she will be less likely to do it again in a larger tank/bowl. Most people say that a minimum tank size for a Beta is 3 gallons. Much larger then most people think they need since pet stores keep them in those horribly inhumane little cups. But even in a larger tank he/she might still try it again. Boredom, curiosity, stupidity… who knows. Be sure to cover your Beta’s tank/bowl.

Animals don't have feelings? Animals know nothing about love? Animals are stupid? Animals don't understand anything? Animals are cruel? Animals don't have thoughts? These are all common impressions that people have about anything that is "different" from them, anything that is not a human being, homo sapiens. People who think this way usually do not know animals, never having lived with them. But these beliefs are by far out of date. They have deep roots, but hey, we are living in a modern and changing society. That means we have to be open to new thoughts. Just because scientists said something a long time ago doesn't mean it's true. We learn new things every day. :) Animals do have feelings.

Aww, I'm sorry. Maybe you should try and talk to it and give it some treats to make it feel better. And put a screen on top of the bowl so that it doesn't happen again. Don't worry, I'm sure your fish will forgive you.

Fish are going to be scared of you, your huge compared to them. But you should keep a screen over the bowl so it doesn't jump out. Are you sure a cat didnt get it?

lol, mine almost jumped out. Well first of all to keep it from happening again, don't fill the bowl to high and second I highly doubt that it's afraid of u. Plus, is it just a certain kind of fish or don't they forget what they're doing every 3 seconds??

My brother had a fish that did that and we finally realized that the fish wasn't scared of us, but that they got startled when we turned on the lights when the fish had been in the dark for a while.

Holy crap I had the same thing happen! I almost stepped on him one morning- he was laying on the carpet all dried out. I thought he was dead. He took a while to come back to normal. He kind of had this haunted look in his eyes after that. I'm not very religious but I called him Jesus fish after that because he was resurrected from the dead.
