8x-5(x-1)=20 using the distributive property:
8x-5x+5=20 now we do the like terms, 8x and 5x are both x's
3x+5=20 We move the number to the other side and +5 becomes -5
3x=20-5 Now we do 20-5
3x=15 Since 3x=15, x=15/3
x=5

5 is the answer.

Assuming that you need to solve for x.. the answer is as follows

When asking these types of problems, please look through the steps and let them make sense. There are about 20 really basic rules that you learn in Pre-Algebra / Algebra I. If you can learn those rules, then you can solve any problem by applying them in different combinations.

8x-5(x-1) = 20
Distribute the -5 through
8x-5x+5 = 20
Subtract 5 for both sides
8x-5x = 15
Add like terms
3x=15
Divide by three on both sides
x = 5
