Because most of you are fatties, and we are mostly skinnies. Because you drive cars that look like buses, and we ride buses, bicycles or walk. Because you have sophisticated weapons, and we have sticks and stones. Because you are supposed to be the 'leader' of the the free world, and we sense no 'leadership'. Because you are supposed to set an example, and we see Guantanamo Bay, Abu Ghraib, murders, torture, Enron, etc. Because you cannot seem to admit when you have erred, all we hear are denials, cover-ups, etc. Because you choose a leader, and then spend his term vilifying, impeding and weakening him, and we wonder what makes you tick. Because you support Israel, and they act like bullies because of it.
AND because the good things that the USA is doing in the world, (and there are many) doesn't get out into the world. You need a good PR company. (Or, Tony Blair must do all the talking for the 'alliance'. He and Bush say basically the same thing on Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and North Korea, but Blair is so much more believable.)
Oh yes, I nearly forgot: Because you think Rambo (with your flag nearly always visible) is a real hero, and we know that he is only a figment of your imagination. (In fact, he is a cold blooded, bloody butcher!) Because in your movies, one American takes on 200 'any other nation' and ALWAYS wins, and we know that is a lot of cr*p!

Jose R: (above) I don't know about the veracity of the statistics on the other points you make, but on the question of Colombia you are mistaken, here the US is doing good. The left-wing rebels are doing the killing, not the US armed and backed Colombian security forces. And because of US support, Colombia had very successful Presidential and Congressional elections a month ago. In fact, the most peaceful in more than thirty years. Anyway, I am quite sure you are exaggerating on the other points as well.

In 2002 Business for Diplomatic Action put together a task force in 17 countries, sent researchers into the street to do random sampling, nothing quantitative about it, nothing scientific about it, and asked people "What do you like about America? What don't you like about America?"

And as you would expect so soon after 9/11, the positives were, "It is a land of opportunity, of wealth and success." Diversity was much admired, cultural and ethnic diversity; a land of creativity and innovation; youthful enthusiasm sometimes bordering on naivete; optimism and sort of the can-do spirit; business acumen and a lot of those things.

But even so soon after 9/11 the negatives were very consistent across regions of the world, and very strident. We were seen as bullies.

1. The perception that Americans exploit, that we move into countries and we take what is to our advantage and we do not give back, the whole idea of American-led globalization leaving some people out.

2. The corrupting influence that American brands, American Entertainment products promote values that are inconsistent with social morays and local cultures--sometimes even in conflict with religions.

3. The ugly American. Our collective personality as a people was described as arrogant, ignorant, loud, totally self-absorbed.

4. Materiality, hyper consumerism — that perception that all Americans care about is the accumulation of goods.

And so this was the beginning of 2002. None of these negative perceptions were about foreign policy, per say. That all of them could be directly or indirectly linked to American led globalization.

Listen, I am a foreigner (Mexico) and will answer your question.

People from Mexico do not hate America, or the Americans, people in Mexico and mostly all over the world hates what most of the American governments have done to maintain their interests throughout the world.

But we have to be very clear on this. We do not hate American people, the big problem has been most of your government actions in other countries.

Let us count the ways... Because they believe what they see on television and read in the newspapers. Because our government is not doing all that great of a job representing the people of this country. Because many american tourists are rude and totally clueless about other cultures. And mostly because the world always seems to need someone to hate and it looks like it's our turn.

I don't hate America, as in a place to visit. Its the people I find are
so high on themselves. They are so into their national anthym
and so dedicated to their country. Maybe they should look at
the jerk they have running their country, and what he is doing
to the USA reputation. Most European countries also hate Americans, I wonder why!!

Why do you think? Wouldn't you hate a country that bombed yours for no reason? Wouldn't you hate a country that interfered in your basic rights as a person within your country? Wouldn't you hate a country that imprisons your people without charge, tortures them and robs them of dignity as human beings?

again the question...and rightly said the rest of the world does not hate americans... They resent america's policies which often coherts, pressures, expolits and many a times downright blackmails other nations. They resent America's hypocracy where they speak of freedom and liberty but all thier policies around the world are for the "american interest" which survives solely on their efforts to keep nations subservient and dependent! The moment a nation's leader stands and says that he will work first and formost to use his nations resources and wealth for the upliftment and bebefit of his people...that leader, that nation is branded as a leftist, as a socialist, as a communist. we can't have a nation using its resouces for its people because WE need thier resources to sustain OUR people! as a result that nation is blacklisted, that nation is sanctioned, that nation is economically pressured, that nationed is embargoed, that nation is ostracised...America goes even further by forcing other nations to support thier stand by pressuring them as well. its neo-colonial divide, rule and counquer.

Nations of world pity the ideological stupidity promoted by the american leadership ...where the people are hog washed and blindly follow idiotic one liners like " They hate us for our freedom!" I sincerely believe that a lot of americans feels as though america is the ONLY free nation that exists in the world! that every other nation is a dictatorship! There are hundred of other nations in the world that are more free than America! ( Just look at cananda! LOL!!!! I sincerely know that I, live in a FREE country! More free than America! We have more peaceful and tranquil living...so free that my homeland is the place where Americans move to in order to get away from it all. Your people and Celebrities visit my nation as tourists, fall in love with its beauty, with or people, with our freedom and want a piece of it, they buy, they move, they live!

When i ask them why when they live in this "GREAT America!...Their reply surpirsed me! They say..."don't believe CNN (meaning...what you see on TV) you, my friend, live in heaven! and I just want to live in heaven too! quite surprise huh, coming from the lips of americans.

I don't hate america! If it were so then i would contemplate america! instead I vacation there all the time, i have family who are americans, my brother is in the american military, i know a lot of friendly, nice, loving, caring, full bred american people... but there are also millions of americans who are high on themselves and even higher on materialism, who have ignored, have forgotten or don't care to know that they as human beings have a social responsibility to contribute to the upliftment of HUMANITY and not solely America! The are so caught up in ME ME ME they sincerely feel that America IS the world! after all is said and done however they do not realize that they will pass away in this life just as I..with both hands empty.

What you have to realize is that simply because you fly a flag, or sing a song doesn't make you a patriot of your nation! Your national responsiblity should be dictated by your human and moral responsibility! and as such you should study more indepth how the mechanics of american policy truly work in this world, you should gather outside perspective, listen and learn. you should disect and analyse! from that you should be able to formulate your own, true, independent opinion. and that opinion is what should be reflected in your national stand when it comes to your national leadership representing america. As the americans tell me i now tell you! don't believe everything you see on CNN!
