Whenever you connect to a web site, it creates an IP protcol connection, and every person has an unique IP address.
The web site looks up your IP address in an index, which tells the location of your ISP (service provider).
If you want to do this yourself, go to www.dnsstuff.com and click on the "city from ip" box, and put in your IP address. (Your IP is in the upper right hand corner).

Yep. They can tell from your IP address, or at least the IP address of your internet service provider. Chances are your ISP uses a proxy server in your area.

some "free" websites that you visit may collect personal information from you... and .. then they sell it to others to make money.... or.. if they know some of your information.. they can get more by searching for you on the internet.. White Pages phonebook?... did you recently register for a prize?.. etc.
and.. some people just phish for information from you with fraudulent advertisements, announcements, notices, etc.. that you respond to... the internet is NOT safe to travel unaware... and without a good firewall installed on your computer
get a good spyware detection program and use it... I personally like ZoneAlarm Security Suite... it has firewall/virus protection/spyware detect and deletion... plus IM filtering.. etc.

Sometimes you'll sign up for something via the internet for which you volunteer your address. Then the company will forward your name, e-mail, and address to other companies that spam you. They try to personalize the notes to make it look like they know you personally. I get all sorts of advertisements from companies who think I still live at my former address.

Yep, that's it exactly. They have an IP tracer on the website that traces your IP back to your location. That's how they write their script to seem like it's personalized for you.
I advise you to stay off those sites as some of them have viruses written in them.

James, they know where you went, why you were there, what you did there, and where you live. They even put a little troll under your bridge and know when you cross over. Delete your history file, your cookies, and your temp Internet files. Then, if you are lucky, they will go away. Good Luck.

Yes someone on your computer went there, they grabbed your ip address, resolved it to the biggest city (c-lec probably) and followed you home - get a good firewall and they will not know where you are
