Most people in the rest of the world (other than US) are at least bi-lingual. Also, most of the top teams, European, South and Latin American, speak the Latin based languages, which are so close to each other. You always get the gist of what's being said in any Latin language if you speak one of them, even if you can't speak that other language. If they have to, they also all can speak English. And let's not forget, these are guys, and sports guys too. They use a lot of body language and hand gestures.

Zidane played in Italy for a few years so he understood what was said.
A lot of French and Italian Soccer players speak close to both languages so they understood eachother pretty well. The ref is from Argentina and a lot of the dialect of Argentinian is close to Italian because 78% of Argentians have Italian descent.

Its really not that difficult because the rules and calls are the same for everyone. Plus these days there is usually someone on the team that can at least confer with the refs.
