For example, I thought of giving my friend a birthday present for her birthday, but, I also thought that if I did do so then I'd have to give all my friends birthday presents. So, I decided to not give her a present so wouldn't have to give everyone else one. Is that being fair? If not, how?

this particular friend must have some sentimental value for you if you want to throw her a present. Being fair is subjective, even for judges...lol...besides, tell your other friends their time will come too since friendship is also important.
