Yes, your Japanese teacher and people from Japan. I don't speak the language myself but do know how to say the numbers from 1-20.

I can understand some words and phrases. In our country, English is a part of the curriculum. My English teacher used to scold me for studying and singing Japanese songs long before being able to translate it completely. She told me that I should be studying English instead. Well, anime fever was just starting at our place during those times and I love the songs and the artworks.
Years later, who wouuld ever thought that the reason why she scolded me for would be the reason why I landed on my job. I was able to go to Japan without spending a single dollar, peso, nor yen. The company that sent me there even provided me with allowances while I was on training. Imagine, I haven't even passed JLPT level 4 at that time. Nobody knows what's in store for you.
Good luck on your studies and for those who will be taking JLPT this December, "Ganbatte Kudasai!" ^.^ I'll be taking it too.

I do.
I spent ten years working for MitsuiZosen in Tokyo; I went knowing only a handful of words.
In the neighborhood where I was sent to work, my neighbors were, of course, all Japanese people, and I found that my boss spoke no English; my secretary spoke no English; only the coordinator across town did.
Boy, you can beleive I learned Japanese as fast as I could!

I know enough to where I could go to Japan without much trouble. However, if you are learning the Japanese language please don't learn it because of anime. Learn it from the heart and put everything you have into it. I'm sorry, I just get irritated when people learn Japanese because of anime.
