It needs to be "degaussed", i.e., demagnetized. The colors are messed up
because the magnetism is pulling the monitor's red, green, and blue
electron beams away from where they're supposed to be.

Most newer monitors have built-in degaussing ability that's activated by
either on-screen controls or a button somewhere on the monitor. It will
either be labeled "degauss" or perhaps be labeled by a horseshoe-magnet
symbol. After the monitor has been turned on for a minute, press the
button or select the appropriate on-screen menu item. The monitor picture
will distort wildly for a few seconds, then return to normal. Repeat if
the first degaussing doesn't work completely.

If the monitor does not have built-in degaussing, you'll need to purchase
a hand-held degausser. These cost $10 or $20 at R*dio Sh*ck. They're
basically a coil of wire with a handle. You plug one of these in, move it
slowly toward the screen, move it around a bit (small circular motions, if
I recall), move it away slowly, and unplug it. It comes with directions.

Good luck!

Turn the monitor off for a few minutes and turn it back on again. Most CRT monitors degauss themsevles when powered on. Degaussing will likely remove the artifacts you describe. If they do not, they may be permanent, or may take more deguassing cycles to clear (I would recommend against repeately power-cycling your monitor for the purposes of forcing a degauss, as this could also damage it).

Hi there! I freelance as a PC Techie, amongst everything else that I do. Listen to the past posts. Shut everything down. (Personally, I would do it overnight). If you have a Flat-screen monitor, overnight if not longer is best - 24 to 48 hrs. If you've got one of the old big monsters, overnight should be more than enough - 12hrs. Hope this helps!

You need to get a new monitor! Your screen is permanently damaged, I did that to a monitor 10 years ago and it is still has pretty colors all over it. I kept the monitor for the fun of it.

Degauss your monitor several times would be the first thing to try.
