It'll be fine! Just wash your hands and put the lid on!

This is a common thing with a Betta Fish.
My two year old knocked over the fish bowl one time and nobody found it until morning. It was still alive in the morning.
In Thailand, where betta fish are found naturally, they live in little puddles in the ground, sometimes no bigger than a footprint filled with water. They can hop along the ground to find a new source of water when their old one dries up.

i work at a pet store and this happens all the time and the fish normally goes on to live a happy normal life that white stuff is called slime coat it is what a fish produces when it is stressed to protect it and allow it ot breath easier .

he should be fine after all bettas in the wild live in puddles .

You should wet your hand before you pick him up next time. You probably just did a number on his slime coating.

Add StressCoat. This will replenish the slime coating and just make him feel better overall.

And for cripe's sake, put a freakin' cover on that thing!

You are right, I don't believe it. Sounds like you touched something else besides your fish.
