If they do, have you thought that it's those same "jerks" who are willing to risk their lives (and not get paid or benefits for it) to save your sorry a** and property.
These jerks who VOLUNTEER - take time away from their families, risk spending all night at a fire only to have to go to work the next day with little or no sleep, have a harder time getting insurance because of the risks they voluntarily take, and run the chance of dying early because of, oh, I don't know --- their exposure to fumes from burning plastics, asbestos and their effects on heart and lungs.
Just something for all you "cool" people to think about --- That is if you can get beyond your narcissistic selves.

Where I live there are no jerks. Everyone in my town gets along. And if there are jerks, they hang out outside of town. No jerks near me. I'm a lucky duck huh?

And you know what else? - When they're out of school 3 or 4 years , they also all tend to grow a moustache, and start wearing a baseball cap. Why is that ?

Yes they do. The reason: beer and chips are usually free for the members of the Dept.
Without incentives like that, there would be a shortage of volunteers.
