They are and I believe there are a lot of Americans who love soccer. However, America traditionally has never been a soccer country per se due to the fact that there are a lot of other sports which Americans consider truly "American". Americans do not grow up knowing only soccer as most other countries and thus soccer will always be secondary to American football or baseball. However, I believe that trend is slowly changing as soccer is growing in popularity all over the world. Eventually, America will win a World Cup and it will all take off from there. I don't doubt that at all.

To answer your question, people say they don't like soccer because the low scores mean less action during the game.
They're dead wrong--soccer is faster paced than some other sports (baseball, for example).
There must still be some die-hard MLS and International soccer fans in the US, too...This is the first time I've seen so many FIFA games broadcast. Even though the US team was out of the World Cup, people continued watching. Maybe soccer is gaining popularity here--we're just catching up to the rest of the world.

Because of the costs of broadcasting. To be more specific, I think it's because most American sports channels broadcast sports that have breaks in them, which gives the opportunity for commercials that the broadcasting companies get money from. Or maybe Americans just have a shorter attention span in general.

Personally, I love watching soccer. I wish that I were a better player (I wasn't allowed to play sports when I was growing up, so I really suck now that I'm an adult) and I'm really looking forward to watching more matches when I move overseas. If I were staying here I would definitely consider getting the Fox Soccer channel... It's such a great game, and it's unfortunate that more Americans don't enjoy it!

To answer the question: it's because "soccer" is short for "Association football", which is the sport's official name because the Football Association were the first body to bring together clubs and local associations from around England that had previously played by different rules and unite them under one code. To deal with a few other misconceptions: There's a popular myth that soccer is an American word but it is in fact British - it originated to differentiate between soccer and Rugby. All of the games around the world today called "football" are derived from the same general idea that sprung up in Medieval Europe, of two teams advancing a ball towards the goal by whatever means - including using their hands! Most people who have a strong preference for one of the different codes calls their favourite code football, and for the reasons I've outlined above everyone who does so can claim to be correct.

As an American who loves soccer, I think it will never be big because of media backlash. Most sports reporters will go out of their way to bash the game. I actually think it is an inferiority complex in that we can never really support something that we have no chance of being the best. We love to call our competitions world championships, but interestingly never invite anyone else to the tournament. Americans that don't like the game should just be quiet and let the rest of us enjoy it. And to those that call American Football the "real football" (which I love too, particularly College Football), get a grip...how can it be the real football when the foot is used so infrequently in the game.

We have a lot more other options to choose from. When it comes to the WorldCup, Americans don't understand why it has to take place every 4 years rather than every year such as the NFL's Super Bowl, MLB's world series, NBA's final, etc. etc. So, even if you get attached to soccer during the WorlCup, it's easy to become detached from it due to the fact that, again, it happens every 4 years! However, since the WorldCup in '94, soccer has become bigger than before. We now have the MLS which is still not as pretigious as the European leagues, but hopefully we will get there soon!! I think that majority of Americans that are into soccer have either a European or Latin American background (such as myself). Don't take the rest of the Americans for granted... they will become hardcore soccer lovers before you even know it!

I think it's great that American like you think like that. Others don't they think soccer is a girlish thing. I just don't understand why America is too private. America have their own sport, that is boring for other countries. They think football is the real thing, and soccer is not. The way they think make little oppurtinity for US to win the WC.

Can you promote soccer in US? Coz the last time I promote soccer in US is 8 years ago( They don't even listen to me!@#), and now I don't want to come their again, it's horrible. I better go to Germany or Swiss, more interesting. B side that I don't want to be fat again

Soccer was imported into the United States from Europe...so Americans have never truly considered it to be their own sport. Baseball, Football (NFL), Basketball, etc. etc. are all home grown team sports which have weaved their way into the culture and established professional leagues. American soccer has been mostly recreational. The concept of leaving the US to play soccer professional abroad is also foreign to Americans.

In Europe, South America, Africa, and even Asia, soccer doesn't compete with many other team sports.....so it thrives. Plus many people in South America/Latin America and Africa are used to leaving their continent to work professional abroad.

Americans believe that Football (or soccer as they call it) is boring because the scores are not that high in comparison to the hockey, basketball, american football or baseball. Also they've always tried to be a little different than the rest of the world and soccer is not in the equasion.

Soccer is boring and slow. Most Americans are far too intelligent to stay amused by such a boring game for so long. In America we have the NFL which surpasses soccer in any and all ways.

Mostly idiot liberal types that want to appear cultured and worldly follow soccer in America. In many other nations "football" is a cultural staple and the enthusiasm is more genuine.

I love the questions you ask by the way. Your Q&A section is like soft porn. If you are ever not "taken" contact me.
