When I needed to cry on stage I used to think of my mum's sister Auntie Cyn who had her food shopping stolen when she went back in the shop to complain about being given a foreign two pound coin. Now it doesn't work and I laugh hysterically. Help please, thesps.

You need to place yourself more into the role, become that person, feel what should be felt in that space and time---and if this particular thought makes you laugh, obviously think of something more tragic. All actors must evolve in every film to become the person they're playing in order to show the emotions needed. Put yourself into the role as the one going through these things. [YOU are the one broken hearted; YOU are the one happy; YOU are the one hurting, etc...it's all YOU at that time in emotions.) Good luck.

At least you now have something can make you laugh hysterically when you need to. The trigger for an emotion can be either real or imagined; the subconcious mind can't tell the difference. Also, consider not crying. It's often more effective to want to cry and hold it back. I've heard it said that when you cry, you have the catharsis. When you don't, the audience has it.

What sort of situation is your character in? Remember it is your character who is crying. It is not you the actor having to cry on stage. If you are truly in character and in the place where the character is then your character will cry because they will feel what the character is feeling. Do you get what I mean? I suppose what I mean is if you get the character right you will cry.

Getting in to character is the hard part. You, the actor must truly believe in everything the character says or does. You wll become a vehicle, a voice for the character.

The few times I have felt I was in character it was like time had stopped. I was aware of everything around me such as the audience but they were not important. What was important was what was happening to me ( the character).

Hope that helps I have to go.

I'm not an actor so this is probably pointless but try having a little vicks vapour rub on your wrist then dabbing your finger in it and rub your eye a little when you know the crying scene is coming up.
Or think of something else thats really sad,,, like me, for taking so long to type this answer just for 2 points

You're not telling us that's the only really sad things that ever happened to you (and you're right - it's much more funny than sad!).

The key to crying onstage is either to take yourself back to a truly sad event in your life (I used to remember when my puppy died - really!), or to truly become the actress who is crying. She's experiencing deep grief, she's in a horrible terrible situation - become her, feel what she's feeling. Done properly, you'll cry.

It's also helpful to know the proper postures and gestures for crying. These will vary depending on the genre (you do it differently for, say, opera or TV), but the proper body positions and motions can convince any audience you're experiencing the real thing.

Good luck!

If you can just clear your head and get completely into character, it should be easier. don't think about any of your experiences, think about what is making the character cry and put yourself in that situation. it's also easier for me to me to cry when i frown, you could try that too.

acting is a discipline, and you have to be committed to it, if you have a cat, have that cat killed, then think of your cat
