i'd say no. a lot of pop singers don't write their own music but you never hear about their writers. and it is very true the one can be both and succeed. i mean look at billie joe armstrong.......he writes his own lyrics and sings them and last year Green Day made 99 million dollars.

Yes and no. I mean, some songwriters I guess don't have the talent or the desire to actually get up and perform their songs, so they find it easier just to write the lyrics and music, and then pass it on to someone else to sing successfully. Some singers can only be successful songwriters with the help of a co-writer to include a missing element.

your first question, No.
second question. Yes. you can be one or the other or both and succeed. Elton John only writes the music. He use to only be a music writer....always used the same writing partner....then he started singing them himself. Neil Diamond use to do nothing but write songs. A lot of the country stars actually write or take part in writing their songs......fewer women do....'cept like Dolly Pardon n such. Anyway.....good luck......best thing to do is learn piano or guitar and develope your own musical style.

yes... are you joking... many of the classic rock bands wrote their own music and lyrics and performed them too
bands like the beatles, led zeppelin, and rolling stones have more talent in one of their member's pinkies than most popular music has today
so it is definitely true... one can be both and succeed... just not that popular stuff today because all they can do is put a face on an album cover or people magazine
