hmmm, it's hard to say if it is the actors the subject material, the script or just the hype...but something is making this movie jump out and scream to movie goers everywhere.
It's a Disney flick to begin with so it has some great family quality.
It's a pirate flick and that in and of itsself draws many in...me included.
It was modelled after the most famous and fun Disney ride, okay who hasn't wanted to see the scene in Pirates 1 where the drunk pirate is chasing the wench. It's there, as well as several other Tortuga/Pirate Den scenes.
And then great great actors that span the number of different generations interested in this film.
I can not see anyone else in this role now and if Depp ever decided to not play the part of Jack Sparrow, ooh excuse me, CAPTAIN Jack Sparrow, the film would go no where. Cap'n Jack is the pirate of the Caribbean and no one else could take his crown...(kinda' like Christopher Reeve will always be Superman and Sean Connery will always be James Bond) I personally can not stand Kiera Knightly-pretty yes, but she has Natalie Portman look-a-like syndrome and I am a woman overly jealous of her. I could do without her and anyone can replace her female lead.
Orlando Bloom, popular as he is, could never hold a sequel on his own. Not saying he isn't talented, just saying he can never and will never be accepted as an heir to Cap'n Jack Sparrow. He's an Errol Flynn where Johnny Depp is a Rhett Butler meets Lon Cheney.
I heard early on in the making of pirate 1 that Bruce Campbell was thought to play Cap'n Jack Sparrow and turned it down. I can not even attempt to think of how different the role would have been.
Depp is the reason I went to see it, not bloom, coupled with favorite ride desire and my pirate wench wannabe'-ness.

No, sorry, the only reason to see the movie is Johnny Depp. Had he not made the first one, Orlando and Keira would still be the supporting members that could have been played by any number of pretty faces. Now, I like both of them, especially Keira, but the success of the first movie is Johnny, the success of the second movie is based off the love of the first movie, and the success of the third will be a love for the series. I'm sure that they both play their roles fine in everyone's opinion, but Jack is the character, whether annoying or hilarious.

Johnny Depp's Captain Sparrow is what made Pirates of the Caribbean stand out from all pirate movies ever made before. He made the original movie a totally unexpected delight. The original Pirates did not open particularly strongly, despite the popularity of Orlando Bloom, but was kind of a sleeper that built momentum by word of mouth. And Johnny Depp's unique interpretation of a pirate was the basis of much of that word of mouth. I agree, the rest of the cast was strong as well. But Captain Jack is what's bringing them back.

Had Johnny not been in the movie, I wouldn't have given it a chance. Orlando Bloom never did it for me, and Keira Knightley is just flat out annoying. "Just Wondering" and "Illiyana" have already said anything I might add to this.

What are we even arguing about or trying to prove? Orlando Bloom or Johnny Depp...they're both incredibly gorgeous and fantabulous actors that you get to be mesmerized for 3 hours on a ginormous screen. Shutup and enjoy the movie people!!!

I think part of the movies success is because of Johnny Depp, not only is he one of the two (the second is Orlando Bloom) hottest actors, but he is extremely talented as well. Olrando also helped out with the success, I think anyway.

I heard that Depp's character was consider original. I think so, too. You never seen his kind of character in the screen. Bloom's character doesn't do much. Everyone is happy to see that guy. His looks drives chicks wild. Knightly, she's alright. I haven't seen the second one yet.
The movie hit the box office with more than 125 million or more. It beat the crap out of Superman Returns. Sad but true. I was surprised.

Hmmm... they both did outstanding jobs, yet i ought to say Johnny Depp. Robert Downey Jr. PORTRAYED a personality excellently, even as Johnny Depp CREATED a personality. Tony Stark became an already made personality the position Downey slipped into his shoes, yet Depp, metaphorically, made a pair of boots. Sorry if that became complicated.
