because we live in a capitalistic imperialistic country where about 1% of the people are in control of the wealth, thus power in this country. also, we live in a society where people are taught that everyman for himself, hard work, materialism, making lots of money, greed, shallowness, ignorance, are highly valued. where as the weak, ill, are considered lazy, retardarded or undesevering of a "decent" life. these people are so ignorant to the reasons that there are so many people living well under the poverty line. they don't care that every 3 seconds a persons dies as a result of malnutrition, starvation, illnesses related to lack of basic neccesities of life. i could go on forever, but the answer to this problem is obviously not a simple one but yet it is one that can and should be solved!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! there is no way that there should be any humans on this earth that should have to live in poverty. it disgusts me on how many people and worse, governments do not even care. all i can say is that you need to get politacally and socially active. write your politicians. start a grass roots program to end poverty in your area, etc...

They should, but sometimes the more money you have the more responsibilities. If you won the lottery you would probably want to live better, you might buy a new car put premium gas, landscape your yard etc, unless people are faced with the poverty, they like to think that it doesnt exist. I am not rich by any means, but I do try to help. Regardless of legal status.

Should? People shouldN'T be forced to help anyone if they don't feel like helping. In my experience, I've found that most poor people are poor because they have no desire to improve themselves. The best way to improve oneself is through education. Now, a lot of people say "I don't have money for education". Thats complete and utter bull$#!t. There are scholarships, grants, and loans to pay for education. I should know, I'm still paying off those loans.

We in the US at least do not have a culture or a tax structure that encourages people helping poor folks. We should all do more. But it is so easy for people who have a little money to live their lives without seeing a poor person that they buy into the neocon idea that if you are poor it must be your fault.

The rich pay taxes and taxes should be going towards programs to help the poor, not to subsidize industries like the auto industry and casinos up here in Ontario.

I agree with Jesus S. And even if someone DID want to improve themself, they could find a way. Except maybe Africans (not all of them) and a few other countries who need help. But there are people helping. Mind if I ask what you are doing to help?
